We love to eat. We love to make cute things. And we love to hang out with our girlfriends.
Eight years ago, our friends, all of us college sophomore girls at Indiana University-Bloomington, started having dinner together every Thursday night. (Honestly, our friend Emily had cable and we wanted to watch Friends, ER, and Will and Grace.) Dates weren’t invited and we all brought an ingredient for the chosen recipe that week (someone always was assigned wine). Because none of us could sit still very long, we introduced crafting projects into the mix.
For all this time, Thursdays have served as a dependable girls’ night in our typically undependable schedules, giving us a chance to catch up with each other on a weekly basis. Through this weekly tradition, we have become closer and have met all kinds of new friends. In an era where text messaging counts as a valid form of communication, Thursday night dinners have kept us grounded and have offered us a space for making genuine girl-time connections.
A weekly tradition may sound overwhelming. But honestly, it doesn’t have to be (and if you can't do it weekly, try every other week or every month. Whatever you can do.) We are all busy doing a million things at once. None of us have money or time to host parties every week. This is why Thursday night dinners are great. Everyone pitches in and takes turns—from choosing the recipe and craft, to paying for ingredients to hosting. The recipes and crafts in this site come from us, our friends, our contributors, our sisters, our mothers and grandmothers and they are intended to be as easy and inexpensive as possible. No Googling of ingredient names required here. We aren’t expert cookers or crafters. Neither are our friends. And we don’t expect you to be either. But our food is always tasty, our crafts are always cute, and we’re always having a good time.
So, dive in! Pick a tasty recipe you think your friends will love and a craft you want to try, and invite your girlfriends to your place this Thursday. We think there’s nothing more infectious than food, crafts, and a kitchen full of your favorite friends, so we’re certain Thursday night dinners will become an instant tradition.
Have fun, and happy cooking and crafting!
Until next Thursday,
Colleen & Stephania
